The Magic of Essential Oils

December 18, 2018

People have been telling me for a while now that essential oils are the magical cure all for pretty much anything you need.

I’ve always been a little skeptical of whether essential oils actually work. But now, I have an excuse to try them out.

I received two essential oils in my Fab Fit Fun winter subscription box from Way of Will. I can honestly say that I didn’t know what I was doing at first when I used them so I started by just putting small drops on my wrists before falling asleep.

I received a sweet orange and a eucalyptus essential oil pack.

I really liked the way these oils smell. It’s not too overpowering and was a soothing scent to fall asleep to. This proded me to do a bit of research to see not only how to use essential oils, but what each one is specifically designed to achieve.

This lead me to finding out that eucalyptus oil helps soothe sore muscles. And after a very demanding dance class the other night, I put a few drops in my bath. I found that the ache in my shoulders had ebbed after my bath, and I emerged feeling very relaxed.

So, I decided to try the Detox essential oils scent from Way of Will, which has four essential oils aimed at relaxing and detox. I have been playing with these scents by adding them to my bath, or putting small drops on suggested areas.

The scent of these oils are very potent so you really do not need to use a lot. A small drop can go a very long way.

So if you are thinking about exploring the world of essential oils, but don’t quite know where to start, keep reading for some tips and ways to use them!

Types of Essential Oils:

There are several types of essential oils that you can use, and all of them do incredibly different things.

To make selecting an essential oil easier, I have broken them down by needs:

Oils for Relaxation

Lavender Oil

Lavender Oil acts as a relaxation and sleep aide. The scent helps to lower anxiety, provides antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties and also reduces muscle spasms. Lavender acts as an overall calming solution.

Rosemary Oil

While rosemary oil is also a stimulating oil that increases brain functioning, it reduces the stress hormone cortisol naturally. So rosemary oil is a good way to get your body to let go of a long day’s worth of stress.

Jasmine Oil

Similarly to lavender oil, jasmine oil helps to lower anxiety. Jasmine oil is also a natural remedy to sleep issues and is shown to increase sleep quality at night. A good night of sleep is clinically shown to improve productivity and reduce overall stress levels.

Oils for Cleansing

Tea Tree Oil

Tea tree oil is found in a lot of beauty and skin products. That is because this oil is a natural treatment for acne and other issues. Unlike some of the harsher chemicals like benzoyl peroxide, tea tree oil will not dry out your skin. Tea tree oil can also be used to help reduce dandruff.

Lemon Oil

Lemon oil is a natural antibacterial and antiseptic. Lemon oil can also be used to treat acne, but is more commonly used to brighten the appearance of dull and tired skin. Plus, if you have oily skin, lemon oil is a good way to regulate that.

Rose Oil

Rose oil is an amazing way to retain moisture in your skin and because of this, rose oil has a ton of anti ageing properties. Not to mention the fact that rose oil naturally exfoliates and creates plump and healthy looking skin.

Oils to Relieve Pain

Eucalyptus Oil

Eucalyptus oil is one of my fast growing faves. It is shown to reduce pain from muscle fatigue and also provides a natural remedy for sinus colds. It is an excellent way to provide relief to your body when you need it.

Did you know that a Koala’s food of choice is eucalyptus?

Sweet Orange Oil

Sweet orange oil is a sweet oil that has been shown to reduce headaches and period cramps. As someone who often gets really bad cramps, this oil has become a god send. It has also has been shown to reduce stress and anxiety.

Peppermint Oil

Peppermint oil is a great way to relieve pain of all varieties. It helps to reduce nausea, soothes sore throats and also acts as a natural pain medication when applied on the skin.

Oils to Energise

Lemongrass Oil

Lemongrass has a particularly awakening scent. The inhalation of this scent helps to increase your alertness and reduces the feeling of drowsiness.

Grape Fruit Oil

Grapefruit oil works as a natural energiser and mood booster. It has also been shown to aide in digestion and weight loss. The sweet citrusy scent will leave your brain feeling awake and energised throughout your day.

Basil Oil

Basil oil has been shown to fight fatigue when applied topically. It is a more calming and subtle scent than citrus oils, but provides similar awakening affects.

How to Use Them:

There are many ways to use essential oils, and each method provides different benefits. I have found that the method also depends on which oil you are using as well, for instance, I wouldn’t apply a eucalyptus oil directly on my face, where as, I would with tea tree oil as a spot treatment.

In the Bath

I love to use certain oils in the bath depending on my needs. My favourite one to use in the tub is eucalyptus oil, as after working out my muscles feel very fatigued. There are other oils that you can use in your bath depending on the needs you have

If you really want to, you can buy a diffuser for your oils. These take them and put them into the air to help reap some of the aromatic benefits of oils. If you don’t really want to spend the money on a diffuser, you can always just apply the oils topically, and you will still receive the same benefits.

Topical Application

Essential oils are very strong. That is why if you are going to apply them directly on the skin, a little truly goes a long way. However, this is a great way to quickly reap the benefits of the oils. Applying a small amount to suggested areas or your wrists will give you the aromatic and topical advantages each oil gives.

I can honestly say that I understand why people love essential oils. They are so versatile and are a natural solution to many beauty and health endeavours. Personally, I love the health benefits and can already see a difference using oils in my every day routine. Now I need to build my collection!

What is your favourite essential oil and what is your preferred method for use?

I am just getting into essential oils. I got a sample pack for Christmas and I’m really into using them in the diffuser. Eventually I want to look into using them for cleaning too.

Eucalyptus and peppermint are two must-have oils of mine. Love them! I don’t think I have a favorite method for using them, but I diffuse oils and apply them topically every day.
